INTRO LOG + SKADI CURSE.

FEBRUARY INTRO LOG( FEB 16TH & 17TH )

INTRO: NEW WANDERERS' ARRIVAL!

Our batch of new Wanderers wake this morning, as all new Wanderers have before, on a plush bed with a mild but lingering sense of recent disorientation. Frigg greets them as per normal, though rather than outright escorting Wanderers to the front doors this time, she and Sigyn allow the Wanderers time and space to leave their bed, meet the pantheon, and even depart the palace at their own pace - but not without a warning. All Wanderers must choose a deity to tether to before dawn the next day, or else one of the gods will choose them. This is of grave importance, as that's precisely how long the magic giving them form is able to last untethered before the Mother's own magic overwhelms it.

(Though the gods are more than willing to allow Wanderers to leave, it's worth noting that many a castle servant - natives, born in this land - might see fit to intercede and insist on the choosing of a god before Wanderers step off the Gladsheim Palace grounds.)

Stepping outside, you're greeted by an almost bright and sunny day... Undermined thoroughly by a sharp, biting wind that permeates any small gap in your clothing. I bet the gods might give you a sweater, if you ask. It probably won't even look that absurd, depending on which one you ask. A trail of what seems like stringless balloons float at eye level from just outside the palace door, guiding Wanderers down the path to a notice board just outside the palace grounds. On this notice board, Wanderers find a brief handwritten guide to accessing the city map on their cuffs, specifically denoting the little colored house icons ( ) to help Wanderers make their way to each god's housing.

Also on this board appear to be a variety of job listings, for those who want to get more involved in Asgard as a whole. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, shall we? There's more than enough time for that once you've chosen a god to tether to in the first place.

GOD CURSE: CHARACTER-BUILDING WITH SKADI.

The storm brewing within Skadi is hardly a secret. She was impatient during the gods' supposedly unanimous address, and in the days to follow, Sigyn (with all her desperately good intentions) tried to balm the irritation but only abraded the goddess further still. She attended the Wanderers' arrival purely by the letter of her duty and swept back out the doors as soon as that duty released her, and since then she's been holed up in her temple, her pointy-faced statues positioned just outside as sentinels meant to intimidate mortals away.

They dared to tell her that she does nothing. Nothing for the Wanderers, that is. Nothing to help them grow and self-actualize, as if these 'Wanderers' are so much more important than Asgard itself, which weakens by the day as her fellow gods fling their magic about to overprotect the Wanderers, or even to satisfy their whims. The consensus to draw back some of that wasteful protection would have pleased her, if she weren't so thoroughly fixated on the slight that preceded it.

They want her to help the Wanderers self-actualize? So be it. There's no better way, truly, than to confront and overcome the ways in which you're flawed.

So the morning after arrival day, many Wanderers wake up with a stinging, itching spot somewhere on their body. Maybe their arm, maybe their back, maybe their throat. In that spot, as it turns out, is a set of words in a deep ruddy brown (almost like old blood) under their skin as if tattooed in place. But these aren't just any words - they prey directly into the Wanderer's fears, their regrets, their insecurities, and their mistakes. They're facing down some of the worst things they've ever thought or feared about themselves.

The other gods, of course, are eager and willing to try to relieve the poor Wanderers of these cursed marks... but they find that it's not quite so easy. Wanderers who seek a god's removal of the words find that not only do the words remain, but a new set appears: Flees the truth.

But that's fine = For most Wanderers, these words disappear on their own in a day or two. A handful of unlucky souls find that their marks linger indefinitely, or seem to disappear but return at truly inopportune occasions down the line.

MOD NOTES

This is the February intro log and Skadi's curse, our mini-event for this month!

Skadi's curse is is entirely opt-in - not all Wanderers are affected - and is detailed more fully in the 'This Month's Events' section of the February Bulletin, and you're welcome to direct any follow-up questions to the Bulletin's mod questions top-level.

You've also likely noticed that god jobs are now live! The listings themselves can be found here (same link as within the 'arrival' prompt), with a brief FAQ featured over here.

Hmm. [Takame has seen a number of retractable blades in his time, it happens when one's regular company is a talented crafter, but he's not seen a knife like Keith's before. While he was curious about it, a blade goes to waste if its wielder lacks the talent so he spent more time giving Keith a full body scan from head to toe, studying his regular stance and posture.

It seemed as if he hadn't registered Keith's question but after a moment he responded.]

I've experienced no change in my gear, nor in my weapon. [A pause.] However, in a number of my abilities I have come to notice some difference. They do not carry the effects they should. [It made little difference as he could still fight effectively, but it may be better to find some common agreement here. So his sister always said.]
thermalwind: (I have a lot of serious brooding to do)

[personal profile] thermalwind 2020-02-20 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[He stares at the target dummy beside the one Takame had been hitting but his eyes are distant. Keith closes his eyes and tips his head slightly. It feels like someone put a bag over his head and dialed his senses down some degrees.] ...my senses aren't as acute. Sight. Hearing.

None of my armor's systems are responding right either. [Keith steps back and sheathes his knife with the ease of practice. His draw speed had been slower. He glances once at the dummy then moves to the weapon racks. Keith scans the blades on display and chooses a thicker, slightly-curved blade. A Khukuri is about the same profile as his sword.]

Probably safe to say anything we could do above average isn't possible anymore. [He lifts the weapon smoothly and that distant expression comes back to his face. He swings the blade smoothly to his right away from Takame to warm up his wrist.]

Armor system...? [The two words felt strange to say together, he'd heard them separate many a time, but the memory of said time caused him to drum his fingers nervously against his borrowed blade's hilt and his eyes lost focus briefly. He shook his head.]

So it would seem... I did not imagine my eyes would be affected so. [His voice trailed off as he spoke, wanting to show some semblance of understanding. His own eyesight had gone weak as well, as if someone had extinguished a lantern in a room and left the lighting with half the power. Rarely did Takame employ any manner of magicks in his day to day life or combat, but the fact that he was affected by this change showed reliance. How shameful, he thought.

He'd rather not linger on that. Not now, instead opting to quietly watch Keith as he warmed up. He wasn't green with a blade, that much was clear. He's silent for so long that it may come as a shock when he spoke again.]
Is this your preferred type of sword?
thermalwind: (Are you sure you’re canceling)

[personal profile] thermalwind 2020-02-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
[He swings it again getting the feel of the sword. One and a half pounds. The blade's profile is almost a match for his own blade. It feels heavier. Has to be the type of metal.]

It's close to my blade. The profile is right but it feels a little heavier. [It's the most he's ever talked in a while. He and his mother chatted but. Keith shakes his head a little. He inspects the edge of the blade and puts a little speed into his next swing. A frown crosses his face.]

...but I think everything is going to feel a little different until we get used to these changes.
hoshikiri: (third eye.)

[personal profile] hoshikiri 2020-02-24 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
... Indeed. It will take some time. [Hence why he's been practicing for as long as he has. Or so he'll tell himself at any rate. Unfortunately it only made him consider that going this route proved the words on his flank completely right.

What would he do, though? Damn them? Blasphemous.]

... A true opponent may be more effective than a striking dummy in adjusting to the realm's limitations. [A pause.] ... Should you so desire. [Zhian would be cross with him, undoubtedly but he'd rather spar and thus be productive than dwell on this curse.]
thermalwind: (pulling the raid boss)

[personal profile] thermalwind 2020-02-25 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're up for it, I'd like that. [Keith says as he visibly relaxes. A fight is something he knows. Even sparring is a way to find himself and ground him in the now. His pupils shift, slitting more like a cat's.

Even reduced to a human's level of strength...he will never be fully human. The change in him is immediate and visible, he's focused and ready for the fight. His unease has vanished and a faint smile tugs at the corner of his lips. Yet his voice remains calm, steady.

The words on his face are just words. They might be true. But he will always be useful in a fight.]
Name your rules and conditions. I'll add some if I feel like we need more.
hoshikiri: (oka.)

[personal profile] hoshikiri 2020-02-26 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Mm. Of course. [Said with a nod. He wanted to note the change in Keith's eyes, never being one to dismiss anything as a trick of the light, but he couldn't trust them as well anymore.

Not unlike a Seeker of the Sun's they resembled for a moment. But it was irrelevant now. There was a change in the Au Ra as well, his posture shifting from a minor slouch to alert and ready, merging into a fighting stance.]

... Mine? [He wasn't... used to being the one to put conditions into place. He rarely knew his own strength, but really it was his habit to defer to others.]

... I will adapt to what you prefer.
thermalwind: (...okay but weekly clears when?)

[personal profile] thermalwind 2020-02-27 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
We fight to the yield. [He takes over as easily as if he'd been leading for years instead of hours. Maybe...under Shiro as his second he'd done more leading than he thought. Keith steps back, giving them a bit of distance between each other. He nods respectfully.]

This is a test of how we've been changed. Not a fair bout for either of us if we went all out without an idea of that. Fair enough? [He swings his sword to the side, again testing his speed. He's still quick like lightning. It just isn't as quick as he'd like to be.]
hoshikiri: (mangetsu.)

[personal profile] hoshikiri 2020-03-02 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm. Understood. [Said with a nod. Ever was Takame one to yield immediately to one willing to take up lead. Habits die hard.

In a fight, however, it took a lot more to get him to even cease, let alone yield. Still, Keith was correct. While he was at this practice for a while and thus warmed up, he hasn't gained a proper understanding of how he's changed.

A note is made that Keith had been studying his style where Takame knows nothing of his. There's a moment of pause where it appeared as though he was waiting for the other man to make his move. But the way his heel elevated slightly off the ground and shades of movement from his leg showed he was set to strike in the blink of an eye.]
